February 2025 Monthly Meeting

The Square Kilometre Array - revealing the hidden Universe with radio eyes

Dr Tyler Bourke

The SKA Observatory is an international endeavour whose mission is to build and operate cutting-edge radio telescopes to transform our understanding of the Universe, and benefit society through global collaboration and innovation.

One array of 197 15-m class dishes with a 150 km maximum separation between the most distant dishes is located in the Karoo region of South Africa.

The second array of 131,072 smaller antennas grouped in 512 stations, with up to 74 km maximum separation between the most distant stations is located on Wajarri Yamaji Country in Western Australia.

The SKA telescopes will be a transformational scientific facility.  They will tackle some of the most fundamental scientific questions of our time, ranging from the birth of the Universe to the origins of life.

£2 for members and £3 for visitors.
